Sharp pins are driven through a composite circular ring, followed by precise weaving of thread to form a grid.
To use, locate your queen and gently press the cage into the frame, ensuring you do not harm the Queen. If possible gently move her to a part of the frame with no brood. Push the cage further into the frame to secure the Queen, allowing you to mark her. You can use a pen, paint, or coloured discs for marking, with the colour indicating the year the Queen was born. If you use paint or a pen, lift the cage slightly to allow her to move but not escape, giving the marking time to dry. Once you are satisfied with the marking, completely lift the cage and release her.
